Bronchiolitis (PALS)

4 month old, admitted yesterday with RSV + bronchiolitis. Pt is on nasal prong oxygen @ 1l/min. Sim commences with Mother calling for help, is concerned that baby’s breathing is faster. The infant has mod – severe resp effort. Respiratory compromise progresses with apnoea prior to on call help arrives.


Learning Objectives:

1. Recognize and manage respiratory distress, impending respiratory failure and apnea in an infant, using appropriate clinical interventions such as airway suction, airway positioning, nasopharyngeal airway insertion, use of high-concentration oxygen, bag-valve-mask, and intubation preparation as appropriate.
2. Apply crisis resource management principles: Call for help early, effective leadership, teamwork, role delineation, communication and handover.
3. Initiate Paediatric ALS Algorithm.
4. Preparation for intubation using Standardized Safe Intubation Package.
