The public health nurse receives a referral from a doctor for a home visit to assess breastfeeding concerns and newborn wellbeing. First time 16 year old single mom is having difficulty breastfeeding and the infant is not gaining weight. Patient is 4 weeks post partum, baby was delivered two weeks early at 38 weeks. Mom and baby live with mom’s mother (newborn’’s grandmother). The mom is planning on returning to high school and grandmother will provide child care. The grandmother is not supportive of breastfeeding.
1. Complete nutritional assessment: infant breastfeeding
2. Identify home safety issues
3. Identify normal and abnormal findings in the development of newborn
4. Provide coaching and education on breastfeeding
5. Identify potential and real issues with parental coping and bonding
6. Provide education on identified problems
