The patient is a 65-year-old male who has a long-standing history of COPD. He has been having dyspnea on exertion for the past 2 weeks. He was placed on BiPAP and transferred to the ICU. The learner will evaluate and facilitate the resuscitation of the patient.
Learning Objectives
– Learner obtains SBAR report from EHR in patient room
– Learner recognizes patient in respiratory distress and declining patient status, and takes steps to initiate resuscitation
– Learner recognizes the need for additional support, and calls RT and physician to update on patient status
– Learner identifies appropriate safety equipment in place at the bedside
– Learner recognizes failed intubation and takes appropriate steps to resolve it
– Learner assesses the accuracy of ordered medications and demonstrates appropriate medication administration per policy using the 5 rights
– Learner ensures the appropriate post-intubation steps are taken
