Exploring the role of virtual reality simulation in critical care nurses’ training: A randomized controlled pilot study
This study examined whether virtual reality (VR) simulation improves knowledge and confidence in managing cardiopulmonary arrest, compared to traditional manikin-based simulation. Thirty-four nurses enrolled in a critical care, emergency, and progressive care internship program were randomly assigned to one of the two training methods. Researchers measured outcomes using a standardized knowledge test and the Simulation Effectiveness Tool-M (SET-M).
Both groups improved their knowledge scores, but the VR group showed significantly greater gains (p < .05). The VR group also scored higher on the SET-M, though that difference wasn’t statistically significant. Notably, 95% of VR participants said they wanted to continue training this way.
The authors conclude that VR simulation is an effective tool for building knowledge and confidence in cardiopulmonary arrest management, and suggest expanding its use across other nursing education programs.
