Immersive Virtual Reality Simulation and Cognitive Development Among Registered Nurses: A Narrative Review

Modern healthcare demands advanced cognitive skills, including rapid reasoning and decision-making, yet traditional education often fails to bridge the gap between theory and practice for registered nurses. This narrative review synthesized recent literature across PubMed, MEDLINE, ScienceDirect, CINAHL, and ProQuest to evaluate the impact of immersive virtual reality (IVR) simulation on cognitive development among registered nurses, particularly within specialized settings like radiologic nursing.
Findings indicate that IVR simulation using head-mounted displays significantly enhances higher-order cognitive processes, including clinical reasoning and problem-solving, with systematic meta-analyses revealing a large effect size for problem-solving improvements. The authors noted that theory-based, interactive IVR scenarios enable safe, repeatable rehearsal of high-stakes, low-frequency emergencies, offering an ideal tool to improve procedural readiness, knowledge retention, and overall patient safety.
