Immersive Virtual Reality vs. Screen-Based Simulation in Nursing Education: A Comparative Study

Immersive virtual reality (IVR) and screen-based (2D) virtual reality simulations are increasingly integrated into medical and nursing curricula to enhance practical training, though direct comparisons between the two modalities remain limited. This quasi-experimental study evaluated learning outcomes between IVR and screen-based 2D simulation among first-year nursing students focusing on orthopedic postoperative nursing management. Participants completed pre- and post-tests to assess knowledge acquisition, alongside a post-test survey evaluating satisfaction and self-confidence.
While both modalities yielded non-statistically significant improvements in knowledge acquisition test scores, the IVR cohort demonstrated significantly higher levels of student satisfaction and self-confidence compared to the 2D group. The findings conclude that while both IVR and screen-based simulations effectively convey core clinical content, IVR provides key psychological benefits by bolstering student engagement and confidence. Further research is recommended to assess long-term learning retention and cost-effectiveness.
