The Virtual Reality Embedded Instructor: Transforming Nursing Education One Innovation at a Time

While virtual reality simulations (VRS) traditionally promote independent learning with minimal real-time faculty involvement, this study evaluated the novel Virtual Reality Simulation Embedded Instructor Model. Researchers observed 213 junior nursing students across two semesters during an emergency department chest pain simulation to assess how embedding clinical instructors directly inside the virtual environment impacts student learning.

Using the Simulation Effectiveness Tool-Modified (SET-M) survey and qualitative feedback, results revealed that 76.6% of students strongly agreed the experience increased their confidence, and 90.7% felt better prepared to handle changes in patient conditions. Furthermore, 93.9% rated debriefing sessions highly for learning contribution. The study concluded that integrating instructors into virtual spaces provides critical, real-time guidance that mirrors live clinical practice, significantly enhancing learner self-efficacy, clinical judgment, and overall readiness for real-world patient care.
