Scenario Description

Nolan is a 6-year-old male who presents to the primary care with complaints of sore throat for the past 3 days. The learner will be expected to evaluate the patient; this includes subjective and objective data collection, determining a differential diagnosis with a plan, ordering appropriate prescriptions, and educating the parent and child about the illness, treatment, preventive measures, and plans for return to school or other activities.

 

Learning Objectives

Learner interviews patient and parent to obtain HPI, PMH, and allergies

– Learner performs a focused physical exam that is appropriate for the presenting complaint

– Learner recognizes evidence of infectious process of posterior pharynx and chooses appropriate point of care testing

– Learner orders appropriate antibiotic and analgesic treatment for strep pharyngitis

– Learner educates the parent about GABHS infection, treatment of symptoms, prevention of spread and return to school/activities
