Scenario Description

In this scenario, a patient with a history of repaired congenital heart disease arrives at the CICU in respiratory distress. This case is progressing to respiratory failure and the patient requires immediate intubation. Learners will start outside the room and receive pre-arrival information of impending respiratory failure. The learner must Don PPE, intubate patient, and, finally, Doff PPE. While in the room with the patient, the learner must try to minimize other personnel in the room and appropriately bag the patient.

Learning Objectives

1. Recognize the need to intubate the patient in respiratory failure
2. Minimize aerosol exposure in this population
3. Demonstrate proper use of PPE, donning, and doffing
