Virtual Reality Simulated Patient Encounters

Reset

Scenario Description

In this scenario, learners manage the post-operative transition of 52-year-old Carly Styles following a T6-T8 posterior spinal fusion. The case begins with routine post-surgical care, focusing on neurovascular assessment and Patient-Controlled Analgesia (PCA) education. While caring for the patient, a post-operative complication becomes apparent and the learners must manage the care and communication to ensure the patient receives the urgent interventions to prevent deterioration.

This scenario has been designed for a moderatorless experience.

Learning Objectives

1. Explain the purpose, safety features, and patient responsibilities of PCA therapy to a post-operative patient.
2. Interpret subjective and objective assessment data to differentiate between routine post-op pain and acute respiratory distress.
3. Demonstrate a structured SBAR to interdisciplinary team members during a clinical deterioration event.
4. Appraise the functionality and safety of equipment and devices based on post-procedure provider orders.
