Scenario Description

The patient is an 84-year-old female who is in the hospital after a bowel surgery. The learner receives a handoff from the previous nurse and should recognize signs that the patient is sick. The learner must perform an assessment where they will find fever, tachycardia, decreased urine output, abdominal pain, and hypotension. The learner then draws labs, including blood cultures, prior to administration of the ordered intravenous antibiotics. They must also perform fluid resuscitation and start vasopressors. The patient will decompensate if these actions are not done promptly, although the learner will be given a second chance to stabilize the patient.
