Scenario Description

The patient is a 2-day-old newborn baby girl, presented to the learner in its bassinet in the mother’s room crying with no monitors. The patient’s mother is standing next to the baby and the learner is informed–via EMR progress notes on VR tablet–that the patient exhibits fussiness overnight and poor feeding. The learner must receive a brief patient history and evaluate the fussy newborn (check vitals/examine patient, check heelstick blood glucose), calm baby (swaddle baby), obtain social history (drug use, domestic violence), educate the mother on possible NAS, and report findings to MD via SBAR format.

Learning Objectives

– Perform full neonatal exam
– Recognize signs and symptoms of NAS
– Obtain history of maternal drug use
