Scenario Description

A 76-year-old male is admitted to the medical-surgical unit three days after abdominal surgery. Over the past two days, he has developed a fever, increased wound drainage, and escalating confusion, repeatedly attempting to remove his IV line. A wound culture returns positive for MRSA, requiring contact precautions. Despite IV antibiotics and restraints, his condition remains unchanged, prompting continued infection control and provider reassessment. Learners must apply infection control practices, administer medications using evidence-based standards (including barcode scanning), and perform a sterile dressing change.

This scenario has been designed for a moderatorless experience and focuses on developing skills such as Performing a Situational Assessment, Preparing a Sterile Field, Using Personal Protective Equipment for a Patient on Contact Precautions, and more.

Learning Objectives

1. Learners will demonstrate daily care activities, including nutrition assistance, oral care, bed bathing, and perineal care for a dependent patient.
