Virtual Reality Simulated Patient Encounters

Reset

Scenario Description

Learners will care for Kendra Webb, an 18-year-old admitted for osteomyelitis following a soccer injury. While beginning her first dose of the IV antibiotics, Kendra develops rapid-onset anaphylaxis, progressing from localized itching to life-threatening airway obstruction and hypotension. Learners must prioritize interventions using clinical judgment to support the patient, stop the causative agent, and communicate with the family and the care team to effectively intervene. Learners will need to recognize early cues, execute emergency protocols, and evaluate the patient’s physiological stabilization, reinforcing critical safety standards for high-risk medication administration.

This scenario has been designed for a moderatorless experience.

Learning Objectives

1. Recognize clinical manifestations of anaphylaxis and prioritize immediate nursing actions, including discontinuation of current medication infusions.
2. Execute the administration of intramuscular epinephrine according to safe medication administration standards.
3. Communicate effectively during an emergency by using the SBAR framework with the healthcare provider and therapeutic techniques with the patient and family.
4. Analyze the patient’s physiological response to interventions to evaluate treatment effectiveness and the need for further clinical escalation.
