Virtual Reality Simulated Patient Encounters

Reset

Scenario Description

A 24-year-old male is admitted with an acute exacerbation of chronic schizophrenia. He is pacing the room, responding to internal stimuli (auditory hallucinations), and exhibiting paranoia regarding his medication and food. Learners must establish a therapeutic rapport, assess for command hallucinations, and administer medication safely. Once the patient is stabilized, the learner must assess for underlying causes or factors contributing to this episode and communicate with the case manager for long-term care planning.

This scenario has been designed for a moderatorless experience.

Learning Objectives

1. Assess the client for alterations in mood, judgment, cognition, and reasoning.
2. Demonstrate therapeutic communication techniques to establish trust and decrease anxiety.
3. Assess client adherence to the treatment plan and identify barriers to medication compliance.
4. Propose a plan of care to address client needs for treatment accessibility.
5. Learners will implement safety protocols related to managing a ventilated patient by checking ETT placement and ensuring a secure airway during the escalation phase.
