Virtual Reality Simulated Patient Encounters

Reset

Scenario Description

A 58-year-old female who underwent a right-sided video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery resection earlier today is admitted to the medical-surgical unit following an uneventful stay in the post-anesthesia care unit. The patient is experiencing significant “stabbing” pain at the surgical site. In this scenario, learners must complete a focused postoperative assessment, manage care for a patient with postoperative pain, and provide patient education regarding respiratory care. Additionally, learners must consider safety concerns for a patient with a chest tube and navigate an ethical challenge regarding a request for the patient’s private medical information.

Learning Objectives

1. Implement nursing interventions for acute pain management
2. Demonstrate proper incision splinting techniques and the use of an incentive spirometer to promote effective pulmonary hygiene.
3. Differentiate between expected and unexpected findings regarding chest tube drainage system patency and dressing integrity.
4. Adhere to ethical and legal standards regarding patient confidentiality (HIPAA) when responding to a request for medical information.
