Scenario Description

An 86-year-old male was admitted the medical-surgical unit for altered mental status secondary to a urinary tract infection. The patient is pleasant but disoriented to place and time and experiencing urinary retention due to Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). In this scenario, learners must complete a focused assessment, manage care for a patient experiencing confusion and urinary retention, collaborate with the healthcare team, and provide patient education regarding indwelling urinary catheter placement and use.

Learning Objectives

1. Implement nursing interventions for a patient experiencing acute urinary retention.
2. Analyze clinical cues including vital signs, pain, and bladder scan data to formulate intervention recommendations.
3. Demonstrate proper technical procedure for bladder scanning and indwelling urinary catheter placement.
4. Apply the principles of safe medication administration to administer IV antibiotics.
