Scenario Description

The learner(s) will participate in an open appendectomy case for an otherwise medically uncomplicated patient. However, a fire breaks out when the Bovie is used on the patient. The learner(s) must assist the operative team in calling for help, putting out any fires, assessing the patient, and giving handoff to all appropriate teams.

Learning Objectives

1. Recognize features of a surgical case that increase the risk of fire and communicate them during the pre-operative timeout.
2. Demonstrate different methods for rapidly managing a fire in the operating room.
3. Communicate patient status to other members of the healthcare team.
