Case Description
This skills module will focus on basic preoperative patient setup skills. The Learner will prep a patient for an open appendectomy by reviewing and/or completing the following skills:
– Hair Removal
– Patient Positioning
– Electrosurgical Unit (ESU) Setup
– Sequential Compression Device (SCD) Placement
– Patient Warming
– Skin Prep
Learning Objectives
1. Identify the tools and materials needed for hair removal, ESU (Electrosurgical Unit) setup, SCD (Sequential Compression Device) placement, patient warming, and skin prep for a surgical patient.
2. Perform the necessary steps for setting up the ESU, SCE, and warming blanket, ensuring proper placement and functionality to meet safety and surgical requirements.
3. Differentiate between correct and incorrect techniques in hair removal, patient warming, and skin preparation to maintain patient safety and surgical sterility.
4. Assess the patient’s readiness for surgery by reviewing the completion and accuracy of the aforementioned steps in patient prep.
