Virtual Reality Simulated Patient Encounters

Reset

Scenario Description

In this immersive VR simulation, learners manage the administration of asparaginase for a 7-year-old female patient with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in an outpatient infusion center. The scenario tests the learner’s ability to safely prepare for chemotherapy, identify an emerging Grade 2 infusion reaction, and execute the correct clinical intervention protocol.

Learning Objectives

1. Recognize signs of an adverse event (generalized rash, flushing, nausea) and correctly differentiate reaction types.
2. Demonstrate appropriate clinical response upon reaction onset, including pausing the infusion, reassessing vitals, treating the reaction, notifying the multidisciplinary team, and safely restarting the infusion at a 50% slower rate once symptoms resolve.
3. Thoroughly document the patient’s reaction and clinical care, while considering appropriate clinical follow-ups such as ordering a blood draw for for serum asparaginase activity (SAA) level.
