Virtual Reality Simulated Patient Encounters

Multi-Patient Safe Medication Administration

Case Description

A learner is assigned three patients during a morning medication pass on a medical-surgical unit. Each patient has unique health conditions requiring the administration of multiple medications. The learner must assess patient status, identify potential safety concerns, and use clinical judgment to determine the appropriateness of each medication. Throughout the scenario, the learner is expected to prioritize care, apply safe medication administration practices using barcode medication scanning and the EHR, and communicate effectively with patients and the healthcare team. This is an entry-level safe medication administration scenario involving more than one patient.

Learning Objectives

1. Prioritize and administer medications safely to multiple patients while considering patient-specific assessment factors.
2. Apply standardized, evidence-based safety processes by utilizing bar-code medication administration (BCMA), electronic health records (EHR), and the rights of medication administration to minimize errors.
3. Demonstrate effective communication with patients and the healthcare team.
4. Analyze prescribed medications by recognizing their indications, contraindications, and potential adverse effects.
