Virtual Reality Simulated Patient Encounters

Reset

Scenario Description

A 78-year-old female was admitted to the hospital overnight from her long-term care facility with suspected influenza. She has an established tracheostomy due to a history of laryngeal cancer and a subsequent partial laryngectomy 5 years ago. In this scenario, learners will need to obtain a specimen sample from the patient’s tracheostomy, assess her Braden and Fall Risk, administer medications, and coordinate care with healthcare team members.

Learning Objectives

1. Apply correct donning and doffing sequences for Droplet and Contact precautions to prevent the transmission of influenza in an acute care setting.
2. Demonstrate sterile technique while obtaining a respiratory specimen culture via tracheostomy to ensure diagnostic accuracy and patient safety.
3. Analyze clinical cues, including oxygen saturation, breath sounds, and tracheostomy patency, to prioritize immediate airway interventions.
4. Evaluate the patient’s risk for skin breakdown and falls using the Braden and Fall Risk scales to formulate a preventative plan of care.
