Scenario Description

In this scenario, a 9-year-old Hispanic male without any prior known medical history is brought in by EMS after collapsing during physical education class. The patient was transported to the emergency department by the emergency medical providers. During the assessment, the patient goes into ventricular tachycardia and the learner must resuscitate following the Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) algorithm. The patient’s mother is at the bedside and the learners must also communicate care with the mother during the case.

Learning Objectives

1. Perform a focused history and physical examination on a pediatric patient presenting with syncope
2. In a timely manner, recognize and implement interventions required to avoid cardiopulmonary arrest in a pediatric patient with unstable ventricular tachycardia
3. Recognize and perform effective respiratory management in a pediatric patient presenting in cardiac arrest
4. Demonstrate effective multidisciplinary communication during pediatric resuscitation
5. Identify cardiac rhythms that require synchronized cardioversion and/or defibrillation
