Case Description
This scenario is designed to assess an individual learner’s ability to recognize signs and symptoms of cardiogenic shock in a 60-year-old male. On a telemetry floor, Learners receive handoff inside the patient’s room from the nurse coming off their shift. Upon entering the patient’s room, the Learner should actively assess the patient and review their medical record. The patient will eventually decompensate, requiring the learner to take the necessary nursing care steps to identify early onset of cardiogenic shock, execute the given BPA order, and utilize mnemonic “SUSPECT-CS” to prevent its progression.
Learning Objectives
1. Identify risk factors for a patient developing cardiogenic shock (CS).
2. Differentiates between clinical presentations of heart failure and impending cardiogenic shock based on patient symptoms and physical exam findings.
3. Interpret laboratory and radiologic findings associated with heart failure and impending cardiogenic shock.
4. Implement evidence-based management strategies for patients showing signs of progression toward cardiogenic shock.
5. Communicate with the cardiovascular team regarding appropriate strategies to ensure optimal care is given.
6. Utilize Best Practice Alert to update and align care plan for patients with impending cardiogenic shock.
