Virtual Reality Simulated Patient Encounters

Fundamentals of Nursing Care—Infection Control and Patient Safety

Case Description

A geriatric male is admitted to the medical-surgical unit three days after abdominal surgery. Over the past two days, he has developed a fever, increased wound drainage, and escalating confusion, repeatedly attempting to remove his IV line. A wound culture returns positive for MRSA, requiring contact precautions. Learners will apply infection control measures, perform a sterile dressing change, and administer IV medications.

Learning Objectives

1. Identify potential complications such as infection, impaired mobility, or safety hazards.
2 .Demonstrate appropriate interventions for post-operative infection control and wound management in order to promote healing and ensure patient comfort.
3. Model therapeutic communication with the patient using strategies such as AIDET and SBAR.
4. Prioritize patient care by recognizing and addressing safety measures.
5. Apply safety protocols related to infection control, restraint use, medication administration, and environmental safety to minimize risks and maintain a safe care environment.
