Scenario Description

The learner(s) will participate in an open appendectomy case for an otherwise medically uncomplicated patient. However, before the procedure starts, the patient develops malignant hyperthermia from the induction. The learner(s) must assist the operative team in calling for help, requesting the malignant hyperthermia cart, preparing dantrolene for the anesthesiologist, and cooling the patient by placing ice and cold towels on his body.

Learning Objectives

1. Recognize signs and symptoms of malignant hyperthermia.
2. Identify the correct procedure for reconstituting dantrolene.
3. Demonstrate different methods for rapidly cooling a patient, such as applying cooling towels or ice packs.
4. Communicate patient status to other members of the healthcare team.
