Scenario Description

A 16-year-old female who is 4 weeks postpartum is having difficulty breastfeeding. The learner–who is a public health nurse–is sent for a home visit to appropriately assess the new mother’s concerns. During this visit, the learner will discuss breastfeeding, identify any safety issues in the home environment, and examine the newborn. The learner will talk with both the mother and grandmother to fully understand how they are coping (mentally and physically) with the new baby. Finally, the learner will provide any education that will help the family continue to care for the newborn.

Learning Objectives

– Complete a newborn nutritional assessment
– Identify home safety issues
– Examine a newborn and identify normal and abnormal findings
– Provide breastfeeding coaching
– Discuss parental coping and bonding with the family
